How does a doctor get paid?

With e-Consult My Doctor, doctors are paid up front by the patient and there are no third-party payers involved.  Patients pay for an e-consult electronically by credit card or PayPal.  The payment is immediately sent to the doctor by the e-Consult My Doctor app.  All payments are handled safely and securely through the mobile app.

When a patient initiates a question or an e-consult with the doctor, the patient must first agree to pay for the service before the doctor is notified of the patient’s inquiry.

When the question is delivered to the doctor, the doctor may:

1.  Accept the question to answer (by this time, the payment to the doctor has already been processed); or,

2.  Ask for More Information or Clarification – the doctor may ask the patient for more information necessary to answer the question and to complete the e-consult; or,

3.  Decline or Refund – the e-consult request.

Here is what the patient pays for with an e-consult:

Total Patient Cost = Your Doctor’s e-consult fee + small processing fee

What is an e-consult?

An e-consult is a question-and-answer dialog initiated by a patient with the doctor the patient already knows and trusts.  The doctor responds directly to the patient.

e-Consult My Doctor provides a secure, one-to-one e-consult dialog between patient and doctor.   An e-consultation works similar to a text message or an email.  However, because traditional text messages and email are not secure and are not HIPAA-compliant, the messaging system in the mobile app carries this conversion in a private, secure manner.

It’s like having personal, direct access to your doctor during times your doctor has offered to be available.
Will my health insurance provider pay for my e-consult?

e-Consult My Doctor  will provide a printable receipt for your records.  At this time, most e-consults are not reimbursable by insurance.

As the patient, you will be responsible to seek any potential reimbursement from  your insurance company or your employer.

Why should a patient use e-Consult My Doctor?

e-Consult My Doctor provides a patient with direct access to his or her doctor for an e-consultation.  There are many reasons why a patient might need to request an e-consult with his or her doctor:

• To ask a clarifying question from a topic covered in a recent office visit.

• To check on a drug interaction concern due to a new prescription written by another doctor.

• To inquire whether a cut on the hand suffered at home should be followed by a visit to urgent care for more immediate attention.

• To ask the pediatrician about a rash or bug bite a parent noticed on his or her toddler child.

• To ask the primary care physician a question during a busy day at the work place that may not necessarily require an office visit.

• Patients who use e-Consult My Doctor receive an electronic personal health record they can use to manage the details of their e-Consults.  Because it is stored on a smart phone, the PHR can be brought with them to the next office visit, too.
What is a patient’s Personal Health Record (PHR)?

When you make an office visit to see your doctor, your doctor updates and maintains an electronic health record (EHR) for you.  This is a detailed record of each office visit.

A personal health record (PHR) is a “mini” health record and is not as detailed as the EHR.  The personal health record does not replace, but rather complements the EHR.

The Personal Health Record (PHR):

• Provides immediate access to an important medical information.

• Stores and makes accessible the information a patient will need to provide to the doctor during an e-consult.

• Moves with you and is accessible wherever you have Internet access and can be printed, too, if you need a hard copy of your information.

The Personal Health Record has many uses and benefits:

• Available “on the fly” when you go to urgent care or to the emergency room.

• Serves as a reminder of information covered at your last appointment.

• Accompanies you when on vacation or business trips.

• Smooths the transition to a new doctor when you move to a new location.

• Delivers health maintenance reminders for vaccinations or follow-ups.

• Issues appointment reminders.

The Personal Health Record contains the following vital medical information:

• Medication list (both prescription and over-the-counter).

• Medicine allergy list.

• Major diagnoses and surgical history list.

The Personal Health Record is safe and secure:

• All data is encrypted and stored securely.

• Doctors and patients access information only through a secure smartphone app with encrypted data transmission (SSL, 256-bit encryption) -- which is the same security banks use to protect financial information.

Why should a doctor use e-Consult My Doctor?
With e-Consult My Doctor, doctors benefit from monetized e-consults that not only generate revenue, but also enhance and protect the doctor-patient relationship they have worked so hard to establish.

e-Consult My Doctor works for doctors because:

• Doctors directly manage their personal availability for e-consults – patients can request e-consults only when you make yourself available.

• Doctors determine who in their patient base can use the service.

• Doctors determine and control the pricing for e-consults.

• Doctors are paid immediately for an e-consult (no third-party payers required).

• Doctors are likely to retain their regular-paying patients because they give patients that sense that personal care is more accessible.
Can a doctor offer a free consultation?

Yes, a free e-consultation may be offered at the doctor’s discretion.

With e-Consult My Doctor, there is a maximum of 10 back-and-forth responses between a doctor and patient for each e-consult question that is initiated.  Doctors may grant a refund at their discretion.  However, a $0.35 minimum charge will be applied for electronic refund processing.
How does a patient and doctor ask and answer questions with e-Consult My Doctor?

When a patient initiates a question or an e-consult with the doctor, the patient must agree to pay for the service before the doctor is notified of the patient’s inquiry.

What are the different ways a patient and a doctor may communicate with e-Consult My Doctor?

When a patient initiates requests an e-consultation with their doctor, it is recommended that the patient submit a clearly typed question for the doctor to read and answer.

To enhance the clarity of an e-consult, the patient may want to include additional information such as photo.   Other forms of information that can be submitted during the course of an e-consult by either patient or doctor include:

• A text-based answer for a patient or doctor to read.

• An audio file for a patient or doctor to listen to  (similar to a voicemail).

• This may be a quicker way for a patient and doctor to “ask” and “respond” during an e-consult.

• A video file for a patient to better convey the information related to an e-consult.
